Skeleton Warriors - REVIEW

The last thing you would expect to see for the Playstation is a side scrolling game considering its 3D capabilities, but Skeleton Warriors does a great job of breaking into the genre.

In this game you are given two different modes: side scrolling adventure and brief (and utterly useless) 3D shooting scenes.

The action rates right up there with some of the best games of its kind with plenty of enemies and healing units to keep you alive for a long time mixed in with levels of a good variety.

The shooting scenes, however, seem rather pointless. You simply fly around and gather emeralds, but if you die you move on to the next stage anyway. Don't let that in any way discourage you from looking at this game, however. It is a mere inconvenience in the side scrolling action, which, once again keeps the player interested at all times.

Accompanying the great action is an even better soundtrack that blows away most other games. It is a good even mix of techno (though used very lightly) with a heavy accent of something reminiscent of Conan. The soundtrack in itself could provoke many people to go out an buy the game.

The basic story line is well presented, but the narrator can be rather hard to understand (don't worry. . .the narration appears in the instruction manual). It seems that Prince Justice and the evil Baron were placed into a fight for a life-giving crystal. When it shatters the baron becomes a skeleton of evil while Prince Justice is empowered with enough strength to find the baron and retrieve the other piece of the crystal to place piece on the planet once again.

This game is most certainly worth the fifty or sixty dollars and I consider it a must buy for anyone interested in side scrolling adventures.

If you are, however, interested only in the 3D shooting aspect, don't waste your time. It's the only portion where the game fails.
